Reading Comprehension: Influencing Factors and Deterrents in the Case of Undergraduate Students

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the factors which are crucial in deciding the degree of reading comprehensiveness in higher classes. This research also aimed to find the detriments to comprehension, among secondary level students with respect to the English language. These were assessed considering various aspects. Teaching approaches applied in primary classes which contribute to slow and partial learning were also found. 23 students from varying educational backgrounds were interviewed. They were given comprehension passages followed by questions to determine their level of understanding. Based on the responses, their comprehension skills were assessed. To understand the problems they encountered during the process, their perceptions were considered.
