Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a substance abuse intensive outpatient program focused on vocational counseling services for unemployed or underemployed individuals with SUDs. Using t-test and two-by-three crosstab analyses, baseline and post-baseline levels of alcohol use, drug use, and psychiatric issue severity and employment were compared. At 210 days, 106 participants had significantly less severe alcohol use, drug use, and psychiatric issues and a significantly greater likelihood of full- or part-time employment. These findings highlight the effectiveness of concurrent delivery of standard treatment for SUDs and vocational counseling services in reducing alcohol, drug, and psychiatric issue severities and improving their likelihood of employment.
