Abstract

This paper presents a detailed analysis and comparison of a novel interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine for high performance traction applications. The influence of PM topology and winding selections on IPM machine's field weakening performance and ripple torque is investigated. Detailed comparisons of the performance characteristics that include important issues such as the back-EMF voltage and its harmonic analysis, magnet mass and cogging torque are presented. Finally, the 36-slot-8-pole PM machine with rotor topology of W-shape has a good flux-weakening performance and is a good candidate for electric vehicle Traction.
