Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how family firms identify, develop and protect their human capital. From an exploratory perspective based on the resource-based view, the key human resource practices are examined in a sample of 433 Spanish companies. Specifically, we examine the orientation and idiosyncrasies that family firms confer to the selection and promotion mechanism, to the training and developing practices, to the design of compensation and executive payments and, finally, to the process of succession
