Abstract
This study presents a method for detecting dangerous turbulence areas with an onboard coherent pulse-Doppler weather radar using a spectral estimation of the standard deviation of radial wind speeds. The problem statement and turbulence parameters are defined. They can be used as basis for determining the necessary technical requirements for the parameters of the hazard detection mode of this phenomenon for the airborne weather radar of a small aircraft. In addition to analyzing the requirements for detecting dangerous turbulence areas, negative factors are considered, such as uneven distribution of wind speed at low altitudes and the presence of additive interference resulting from ground clutters along the side lobes. They allow evaluating the technical parameters of antenna pattern that detect turbulence hazard areas for flights.
