Abstract
The measurement of high pressures (1-100 MPa) using a fiber-optic sensing technique is addressed. This technique is based on the causal dependence of the polarization mode coupling on the external pressure occurring between two orthogonally polarized eigenmodes of a highly birefringent, polarization-preserving optical fiber. From a metrological point of view, a static input-output characteristic of such a fiber (which represents this dependence) has two important drawbacks: it is nonmonotonic, and it depends on the temperature. Two exemplary sets of the static characteristics of the fiber-optic sensors are shown.<>
