Abstract
A knowledge acquisition support environment (KASE) is described that assists the knowledge engineer from the initial elicitation of domain expert knowledge through the actual prototyping of a working knowledge-based system (KBS). The KASE system is based on the commercially available KMS hypermedia system. Salient aspects of KASE include a collaborative environment, an easy to use interface, hierarchically structured templates to record knowledge, extensive validation capabilities, and creation of facts, rules and properties in an intermediate knowledge canonical form to allow prototyping. KASE had been successfully used to acquire knowledge for a complex expert system.<>
