The possible Role of IFN-γ & TNF-α in bacterial eye infection patients

Abstract

The number of participants were 150, and those were recruited for the study (118 eye infections patients and 32 apparently healthy). Patients with bacterial eye infections (blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or keratitis) were diagnosed by ophthalmologists at Ghazy Al-hariri Hospital and Ibn Al-Haytham Hospital in Baghdad in periods between September 2021 and February 2022, while controls were obtained from various sites. They were of both sexes, with ages ranging from 20 to 60. Blood samples and Eye swabs were collected from all participants. The serum was used for immunological tests to study the role of interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α on patients with bacterial eye infections. Cytokines are an important component of the immune response that guards the healthy eye against potentially dangerous microorganisms and non-infectious stimuli that may be present in the surrounding environment.
