Abstract
This paper presents an approach to studying relationships between students' social presence and course topics from transcripts of asynchronous discussions in online learning environments. Specifically, the paper uses topic modeling and epistemic network analysis to investigate how students' social presence is expressed across different course topics. Finally, we show how this method can be adopted to examine how students' social presence changed due to an instructional intervention. The results of this study and its implications are further discussed.
