Abstract
The aim of the article is to explain the issue of the limiting factors that affect the high-speed transfer of data in single-mode cables and focusses on the dispersion of the optical signal. It covers chromatic and polarization mode dispersion, including the ways of measuring. The text explains that chromatic dispersion can be eliminated at the start by choosing the right geometric properties of the cable. If chromatic and polarization mode dispersion needs to be compensated, various compensation methods are described which can more or less successfully eliminate dispersion in various situations.
