Abstract
In a recent paper, the authors have introduced the concept of a novel bearingless (slice) motor topology, the bearingless permanent magnet Vernier motor intended for low speed and high torque applications. It features an exterior rotor typical for direct drives. The feasibility of this new motor topology was proven by finite element simulations. Based on the results of these simulations, a prototype was manufactured and successfully put into operation. This paper, therefore, presents the control scheme that comprises the measurement of active and passive forces, including the active torque generation, as well as the performance of this bearingless permanent magnet Vernier motor prototype.
