Abstract
The use of clay pottery in the Scythian population’s
burial and memorial rituals of the Dnipro Left-Bank Forest-Steppe Region is considered
in the article. It has been traced that the locally made productsand imported antiques
were quite frequent finds in the mounds, as well as in the ditches that surroundedthem.
These clay artifacts are associated with purification rituals, farewell gifts, and
funeral meal.Despite the similarities (ethnic, religious, cultural, territorial)
monuments of the Dnieper Forest-Steppe Left Bank Region, complete unity in burial
customs in the 8th-4th centuries BC didn’t observe. It shows the heterogeneity of the
population’s burial rituals, even in some close regions, and possiblechronological
changes in the whole ritual. We can observe quite similar rituals during the diggings of
simultaneous burials in the DnieperForest-Steppe Right Bank Region and Ukraine steppe
zone’s Scythian mounds.Unfortunately, most of the mounds were looted in ancient times.
It is not yet possible to trace clearlythe differences in burial rituals for
socio-property differentiation of the dead.Examining clay pottery, it can be confirmed
that the local population’s burial rituals with using theseartifacts were not
conservative. Imported antique products had been using actively in them from the
5thcentury BC.The same clay pottery was used in everyday life and burial rituals.
Analysis of clay pottery’s contentsusing DNA technology will determine what food was in
them.New archаeological diggings of mounds and soil necropolises, expansion of source
base will allowtracking changes in burial rituals in space and time.
