Abstract
In this paper a passive islanding detection technique based on negative sequence apparent power is proposed for islanding detection in microgrid. Sequence components from pre and post events are derived in real time from relays installed at the distribution generation terminals. An islanding detection parameter is derived from sequence component information for islanding detection. The main advantage of this technique is that the islanding detection parameter is simple product of negative sequence components available at relay terminals. Since negative sequence components are considered for islanding detection zero power mismatch condition can also detected without fail. Hardware implementation of the above technique is simple due to the absence of complex mathematical formulations. The technique is implemented on modified IEEE 13 bus distribution system, various non islanding phenomena like symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults, capacitor switching, step load change are simulated.
