Abstract
Safety of structures from shocks is a critical problem in accidents such as crashing of automobiles, earthquakes and explosions. Yield mounts/isolators are used to isolate the propagation of such shocks from source to target. “J-mount” is an example of yield mounts. In this research, shock absorbing performance of a “J-mount” type “3A” is evaluated using Finite element analysis (FEA). Explicit Dynamics module of ANSYS was used to perform FEA. Shock inputs ranging from 40-160 g were applied to “J-mount.” As a result, Von Mises stresses, total deformation, shock transmitted and efficiency of “J-mount” were plotted for the whole range of shock loading. It was found that maximum efficiency of “3A” type “J-mount” occurs at a shock value of 100g and it failed to damp shock when shock value becomes 160g.
