Abstract
Due to the growing demand for 3He helium-based neutron detectors and the decrease of 3He helium gas storage around the world, new alternative detection technologies have been developed by research scientists in particular, the new ZnS(Ag)/6LiF neutron detector to efficiently detect the neutron flux in the presence of gamma rays. The main objective of this work is to investigate the detection quality of this detector, notably the efficiency and sensitivity of detection; the neutron/gamma discrimination capability; and the counting stability over time. The results obtained in this work from the performance characterization of the ZnS(Ag)/6LiF scintillation neutron detector are in good agreement with quality requirements, and very encouraging to use it for the efficient and reliable detection of neutrons, which could be used in criminal or unauthorized acts, for the purpose to ensure permanent radiological monitoring of the general public and their environment, including nuclear safety and security.
