Abstract

: Biological, psychological and socially based violence by mentally ill people leads therapists to an insoluble dilemma between therapeutic support and the appli-cation of violent measures such as fixation and compulsory medication. In addition, one-sided distorted media representations awaken archaic fears in the population, which blame the persons working in psychiatry and throws back the modern efforts of patient care into the distant past. In contrast, empirically collected facts are presented. The subjective side of the mentally ill, who tries to stabilize his self by means of hetero-or autoaggression, and the special counter-transference of the practitioners should be carefully reflected upon. Real anxiety and unconscious fears of those who deal with aggressive mentally ill people require special strategies including danger-prevention training.
