Abstract
Background. The aim of the study was to assess and prove that Tai Chi, as a form of physical activity, is an effective form of Physioprophylaxis in the aspect of physical and mental health.
Material and methods. A total of 64 people were examined. The study group was composed of 32 persons training Tai Chi Chuan for at least 5 years, aged 35- 70 years (the mean age of the participants was 49.9 years). The control group included 32 people who did not train Tai Chi, aged 27-70 years, occupationally active and physically fit (the mean age = 51.59 years). The tests applied included the General Self-Efficiency Scale (GSES) and the Unipedal Stance Test (UPST) performed with closed and open eyes. The tests were conducted in the group of participants training Tai Chi Chuan and the reference group of participants who did not train Tai Chi Chuan. Statistical analysis of the obtained results included calculation of Pearson correlation coefficient and student’s T-test.
Results. The results indicate that Tai Chi significantly improve body balance, p<0,01. Besides, it helps maintaining balance at a constant level or even improving body balance, especially in older population. The results obtained by the vast majority of participants from both groups indicate high levels of generalized self-efficacy related to pro-health behaviors.
Conclusions. The results let us conclude that Tai Chi Chuan is an effective form of Physio-prophylaxis. Improves the balance of the body at any age and it strengthens psychophysical health.
