Abstract

The Theory of the Novel by Georg Lukács is analyzed in this research. His main proposal that the novel and the epic share the same purpose, their engagement with reality, defines a trajectory that ranges from Homer to Cervantes, throughout Dante. This theory is refuted since it generalizes the concept of novel, ignoring its different types and putting aside important Greek and Roman works that represents this genre. Among these works, Satyricon by Petronius is possibly the best work of transition that could be inserted in the trajectory described by Lukács, instead of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
