Avalokitesvara and an Old Uyghur Inscription from Bazaklik Cave 46

Abstract

The paper examines an Avalokiteśvara painting of the Bäzäklik Cave 46 (Grünwedel's number 35; now preserved at The Hermitage). Its cartouche inscription in Old Uyghur confirms the identification of the main figure. The text gives an account of the reason for creating the painting, it also has a section of a merit transfer on behalf of the donator himself and his family members.
