LINGUISTIC SITUATION IN UKRAINE AT THE BEGINNING OF XXI CENTURY

Abstract

The article deals with the linguistic situation in modern Ukraine and the following problems: strengthening of the status of the Ukrainian language as a state one, the counteractions and resistance of the Russian side concerning this status, advantages and drawbacks of the language law, which has been recently adopted by the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the new variant of the Ukrainian orthography, which has failed to fulfill expectations of linguists, concerning a full range of existing orthographic problems.
