Abstract

Received: Revised: Accepted: April 29, 2019 October 27, 2019 December 02, 2019 The purpose of the study were described (1) the difficulties experienced by students in solving basic chemistry problems, (2) factors that caused students’ learning difficulties in learning basic chemistry. This research was descriptive qualitative research. Research subjects were students of Mathematics Education who attended basic chemistry course. The selection of sample classes used purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques were carried out by carrying out a question-based test in the form of tdiagnostic test and non-tests in the form of questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that students’ understanding for limiting reagents was 56.95%, calculation of acid base ph was 60.5%, identification of base acids 59.55%, colloids was 64.1%, naming hydrocarbon compounds was 64.9%, and writing structures hydrocarbon compounds was 67.35%. Factors that caused learning difficulties consist of interest, motivation, concentration, study habits, and intelligence. Students’ interest was 40%, motivation was 24%, concentration was 36%, study habits was 32%, and intelligence was 28%.
