Abstract
This paper presents the design and analysis of a cost effective power quality improvement method using de-tuned filters for an electric power distribution network. Analysis of the resonance at different harmonic components such as 5, 7, 11 and 13, as well as power factor (PF) improvement has been carried out by a capacitor bank. By connecting a capacitor bank will produces harmonics amplification, causes power disturbances in the network, continuous tripping of capacitor and finally failure of the capacitor. This harmonic amplification problem can be overcome by connecting a de-tuned filter in distribution network. The effect of the harmonic frequency on the fundamental will depends on the value of the detuned filter components such as inductance and capacitance. The value of the inductance and capacitance has been design such that the resonant frequency of the detuned filter will be less than the frequency of the selected harmonics. The two node distribution network with de-tuned filter has been developed using MATLAB-Simulink platform. The result of the proposed detuned filter for different operating condition of the distribution network has been presented.
