Any study relating to William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, is a challenging task. In this introductory overview, we address four themes: Kelvin himself, his faith, his politics and his relationship with the industrial revolution and the industrial world. The important question of the change in Kelvin’s reputation from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century is addressed in parallel. 1 A complex challenge
