The Role of Eye Banking in Implementation of the Integrated People-Centered Eye Care (IPEC) Model

Abstract

Vision loss and blindness are global public health concerns. Measures must be taken to address the magnitude and causes. The integrated people-centered model of eye care (IPEC) has been advanced by the World Health Organization and the International Agency to Prevent Blindness to address these challenges and facilitate the delivery of eye care. The US eye banking community occupies a distinct sector within the spectrum of vision services and global public health efforts. Alignment with the IPEC model and these global priorities is a logical development for the cornea and eye banking sector, and addressing gaps in the evidence base for corneal disease will serve to strengthen these efforts.
