Reflections on Archisemiotics

Abstract

Archisemiotics, which was born in the 1950s, not only opened up new ideas for architectural design, but also provided effective methods and theories for people to deeply understand the meaning of architecture. However, Archisemiotics itself still has the problems like inconsistent terminology and unclear discipline positioning. In response to these issues, the paper first reviews the development process of semiotics, sorts out the theoretical sources of archisemiotics, and discusses semiotic theories that are widely used in the field of architectural design. Finally, the paper gives some opinions on issues of archisemiotics such as discipline positioning and research scope.
