Abstract
This paper presents an efficient strategy for the optical network redesign with a biconnectivity-oriented topology (both two-connected edge and vertex). Based on the graph theory and previous approaches, it is developed to retain essential network links, improve their utilization, and ensure network reliability and survivability. A new cost-effective network structure is found subject to several important constraints. The proposed strategy composed of reduction, augmentation, and fine-tuning reduction, is tested for some IP-backbone networks. Furthermore, it can also contribute to other optical backbone (or access) network redesign problems.
