Abstract
The sudden use of an online learning management system is creating problems for teachers. This research aims to identify the problems that occur during teaching an online speaking class in the COVID-19 pandemic era through a case study of an English teacher in Jakarta. Observations of the teaching and learning process, then interviewing the teacher are conducted to elaborate on the problems for one teacher in one of the high schools in Jakarta. At the end of the research, researchers found that the teacher is exhausted due to the lack of other teachers. Besides having technical problems, she found that students in 7th grade have distinct English proficiency for students from public school and private school. Another finding concerns the lack of motivation to participate actively in an online class. This research will give insights into the importance of teaching preparation and reflect on our own teaching to improve our teacher professional development.
