Abstract
A 71-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. An enhanced abdominal CT scan showed the acute appendicitis with abdominal abscess. Emergency appendectomy was performed. The excised appendix was swelling and its wall revealed gangrenous lesions with partial perforation. Pathological findings showed gangrenous appendicitis with numerous old ova of schistoma japonicum in the submucosal layer of appendix. patient with schistosoma japonicum 1978 the eradication of Miyairi shellfish, the intermediate host, and few cases with old ova of schistosoma japonicum reported. However, of schistosoma japonicum have recently been increasing. Suspicious active cases are needed for the treatment with anthelmintic administration. We should pay attention to the possibility of active infection with schistosoma japonicum when its ova are detected in the resected specimen.
