New Directions in Adult Education

Abstract

For Western Europe, adult education might be said to have ancient roots. Surely the Church has always sought to educate the people in Christian beliefs and ritual. The same people were often taught about their obligation to show loyalty to king, nobleman, and anyone else superior to them in the class structure. The young men ordered to serve in the different armies that have fought across Europe were taught marksmanship, discipline, and obedience to commands. And the apprentice turned journeyman continued to learn his trade from the master.
