Abstract
Learning is a process of changing behavior in individuals as a result of experience. In order to gain experience, students use various learning media. Which learning media is effectively used is still a question that needs to be studied. This study aims to describe the types of online communication media used by students in learning, and their effectiveness. This research was conducted at the State University of Malang, with a total sample of 146 through random sampling technique. Data collection techniques were questionnaires and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the online communication media that were mostly used by students were WhatsApp, Google Search, and Email, while those considered the most effective were google search, google meet, and email. The intended use varies from one medium to another according to its usefulness. In general, the media is used mainly for the lecture process, obtaining learning resources, discussions, and doing or sending assignments. There is no influence of frequency and perceived effectiveness of the use of communication media on student achievement.
