Abstract
Reducing the emission of harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides
has been identified as a priority target in the European Union. Aviation is one of the main sources of
pollution. The reduction of pollutant emissions can be achieved by the use of the electric jet engine.
This type of a jet engine differs significantly from a kerosene-powered engine. The article presents
the concept of an electric jet engine with the rotor that is magnetically suspended. Demonstrators of
active and passive magnetic bearing technologies and bearingless electric motors, developed at the
Avionics Department, are presented in the paper.
