Educational Approaches for Personnel in Vessel Traffic Services

Abstract

The role of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) continues to evolve as a key partner in safe navigation, port efficiency and protection of the maritime environment and adjacent shore infrastructure. The personnel who carry out the duties related to VTS are trained in the specific elements and competences of VTS. The core elements of the training program have undergone revision based on over two decades of experience. The changes in the training reflect not only the features of the current maritime ecosystem but also educational training methodologies. This paper presents an overview of the requirements, and obligations, for VTS training. It also explores the role of VTS in port resource management, including the interactions between VTS, Pilots, Masters and allied services.
