The main objective of this paper is to explore and analyze the development of e-learning over the last 30 years, outline ad discuss trends and challenges in the context of the usage of social web, semantic web and intelligent technologies. We also analyze the evolution of computer – based tools and technologies, used in e-learning and outline the future of the usage of intelligent technologies in e-learning. Other aspect of our analysis is relationship between tutoring paradigms and evolution of the smart systems in the e-learning area.
