Some observations on Vietnamese demonstratives

Abstract

Here we outline some observations concerning the classification and distribution of demonstratives in Vietnamese. We challenge the traditional assumptions in which demonstratives are claimed to be DP-final and demonstratives are all the same. In addition, we propose a way to account for several minimal contrasts displayed by Vietnamese demonstratives and then conclude the paper by discussing some shortcomings of such account.
