Marrakech treaty: Impacts of its implementation on repositories and accessible resources

Abstract

The Marrakech Treaty (MT) is a milestone in the relationship between copyright and human rights, is the first international treaty to be established with the exclusive objective of protecting cultural rights. This article details the most relevant aspects of the Treaty, its impact on the development and implementation of Accessible Educational Resources Repositories, and describes exceptions and limitations to Copyright. The MT advances in Latin America are summarized and an example of MT implementation in Uruguay is presented, based on the development of the Digital and Accessible Library Project (BIDYA). Finally, some lessons learned and recommendations are established.
