Post-COVID, Perception and Need for Teaching Competency of University Faculty: A Case of the Philippines

Abstract

This study aims to analyze faculty perception and the need for teaching competency in developing countries through field research in the context of posit-COVID. To this end, this research developed a survey tool consisting of 34 questions in 7 areas and analyzed the collected data from 163 respondents of a national university in the Philippines. Then, the study conducted the t-test, Borich's needs, and The Locus for Focus to derive priorities and support areas for improvement needs. The research results are as follows. First, there is a significant difference between importance and performance in teaching competency, confirming the need for improvement. In particular, it showed high demand in instruction competency related to e-learning and major classes, teaching strategy related to learner participation-centered instruction, strategy on evaluation and feedback, and content knowledge. On the other hand, in terms of the competence for instructional design and analysis and organizational value practice, the difference between importance-performance level and the demand was at the lowest level. This study suggested a specific need for the development of competency for university faculty, which can serve as a basis for understanding the local needs of developing countries and exploring the way for international cooperation in higher education.
