This series of projects is known as the Atlantis InterArc EC Research Programme. The first phase has established parity for shared screen and simultaneous voice communication via ISDN Planet II. The establishment of a ‘Virtual Studio’ at each location has allowed the group to exchange files, see other computer screens at remote locations, and operate other computer systems. This paper explores the convergence of technology between computers and communication and the natural development of a computer iconic language specific to a defined European user group, when cognitive investment is required to learn an iconic system through the intended removal of all phonetic underpinning.
