Based on the new antenna designs a reconfigurable multiband operating antenna using in mobile phone is studied which can select two groups of operation frequency bands adaptively by electronically. In particular, each group of frequency bands can serve several different communication systems which may include various combinations of GSM850, GSM900, DCS, PCS, and UMTS simultaneously. Therefore, a various of communication systems can be conveniently served through only one antenna by electronically selecting different antenna modes. One strong point is that through the different working modes, the total antenna physical volume can be reused which make the overall antenna pattern more compact. In the first design mode it can support GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900, and UMTS. In the second antenna mode, it can cover GSM850, DCS1800, PCS1900, and UMTS. The designs are investigated when ideal switches is applied. The designs are verified through both numerical simulations and measurement of an experimental prototype.
