Abstract
This paper proposes a particle swarm optimization method for solving optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. The proposed PSO have been applied for the ORPD problem with different objectives such as minimization of active power losses and improving the voltage profile satisfying various constraints of power flow equation, generator voltage limits, switchable capacitor banks, transformer tap changer limits, and transmission line limits. The proposed method has been examined and tested on the IEEE 30-bus and the Algerian electric power system 114-bus and the obtained results compared with two other methods, namely, Genetic Algorithm (GA), interior point method (IPM) and other methods in the literature. The result comparisons demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach and show its effectiveness and robustness to solve the ORPD problem. Therefore, the proposed PSO can be a.
