Abstract

The high sampling rate of phasor measurement unit (PMU) makes it possible to capture the power system dynamics and thus enables the real-time oscillation monitoring. American Electric Power (AEP) has deployed the Wide-Area Measurement System (WAMS) utilizing PMUs for years. This paper summarizes AEP's implementation experiences of real-time oscillation monitoring and post-event analysis with PMU data to enhance the situational awareness of power system.
