Abstract

AbstractThe year 1974 marked the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Institute of Microbiology of Rutgers University and the official changing of its name to The Waksman Institute of Microbiology. It was also the expiration date of the U.S. Patent No. 2,799,620, “Neomycin and Process of Preparation,” granted in 1957 to Dr. Selman A. Waksman and to me and assigned to the Rutgers Research and Educational Foundation. Nineteen seventy-four also marked the 25th year following the announcement of the discovery of neomycin, but the tale of neomycin goes further back in time.
