Abstract
The article treats the scholarly activity of the Latin schools of Italy in the 11th-13th centuries, which produced a specific type of lexicographic works, a derivational dictionary. The hermeneutic procedures and practices of such lexicographers and encyclopedists as Isidore of Seville, Papias the Lombard, Huguccio of Pisa, John of Genoa are considered. Their ancient Latin and Greek sources, means and methods of organizing knowledge in the derivational dictionaries compiled by them are discussed. The peculiarities of the derivational explanatory model (per derivationem), starting with Isidore of Seville, are investigated. Attention is paid to the inseparability of linguistic, semantic and ontological layers of realities, characteristic for the worldview of the authors under discussion, whose operation did not distinguished lexemes and their denotata, objects of extralinguistic reality.
