Scavenger In The Frame of Poverty In Ambon, City

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to illustrate the underlying causes of poverty by poor scavenger communities, to know the factors of ignorance about the financial management of households of poor scavenger communities, and to formulate effective urban poverty reduction strategies. This research was conducted on 4 districts: Sirimau, Nusaniwe, Baguala, and South Leitimur, because scavengers are spread all over the districts. The method used was descriptive quantitative, with data collection techniques of observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive method. The results were obtained based on the characteristics of scavengers, with low income levels, unhygienic home standards, low health status, minimum education and knowledge resulting in an inability to manage household finances well. This resulted in the scavengers barely having a plan for the family's future including children's education. Keywords— Scavengers, urban poverty, Ambon.
