Abstract

Background: We aimed to assess the prevalence of dyslipidemia and the associated risk factors in patients with hemodialysis. Methods: A cross-sectional study of disease characteristics, lipid profile, and lifestyle factors were conducted on 204 patients undergoing hemodialysis. The patients were enrolled conveniently. The multivariable generalized additive model and multivariable linear regression model were built using a backward elimination process to assess the relationship between triglyceride/HDL cholesterol and independent variables. Adjustment of models was done for age, sex, diet, mood, sleep, physical activity, social activity, smoking, and disease characteristics. Results: In a multivariable backward linear regression model, sleep quality and phosphorus levels were the predictors of triglyceride. Age and sleep duration on weekdays and weekends were the predictors of HDL cholesterol for men whereas physical activity and diet were the predictors of HDL cholesterol for women on hemodialysis. Conclusion: Sleep quality and quantity, phosphorus levels, diet, and physical activity were associated with high triglyceride or low HDL-cholesterol levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
