Geosteering a Well in Considerable Structural and Stratigraphic Uncertainties Environment, a Case Study from Kazakhstan

Abstract

Horizontal drilling enables field development with less wells and smaller environmental footprint, reducing drawdown, increasing production and sweep area. Despite these advantages, horizontal drilling is not widespread in Kazakhstan, possibly due to limited information and limited knowledge of oil companies on available technologies and services that allow to manage geological risks related to horizontal drilling. The authors discuss an example showcasing geosteering with stratigraphic approach, more than one offset well and conventional non-azimuthal resistivity inversion to determine distance to boundary.
