Abstract
The author examines the origins of the "mad cow" crisis in Britain, identifying the responsibility of the Conservative government with its policy of deregulation, and details government attempts to "cover up" the problem and to prevent discussion of the question of responsibility by conducting a campaign of anti-Europeanism.
