The results showed that students with the FI cognitive style had reached level 6 in modeling competence, namely, performing the entire process of mathematical modeling to interpret and validate solutions against the context of a given problem situation. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the achievement of mathematical modeling competencies of students with field-independent and field-dependent cognitive styles. The type of research used was a mixed method involving 65 SMP N 7 Muaro Jambi students. The data was obtained through the GETF cognitive style test, a mathematical modeling problem-solving test, and interviews. The results showed that students with the FI cognitive style had reached level 6 in modeling competence, namely, performing the entire process of mathematical modeling to interpret and validate solutions against the context of a given problem situation. Meanwhile, FD students up to level 4 can translate real problems into mathematical problems (mathematical models) but cannot use them correctly in mathematics, even though the quality of the models built by FD students is not appropriate to solve problems.
