Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a prototype for a tangible interface to encourage turn-taking in group discussions. Teams with better distribution of turn-taking have been found to outperform those with poorly distributed turn-taking. Making teams aware of their turn-taking dynamics thus has the potential to improve their performance. This paper explores the use of a tangible interface as a means to both increase team members' awareness of their turn taking dynamics, while actively driving the conversation towards more equivalent turn-taking. The construction of a prototype called a TurnTable is detailed, as well as potential enhancements to the design to improve group performance.
