Abstract

This paper focused on improving the aerodynamic characteristic against vortex induced vibration by installing an appendage attached at the bottom plate. Discrete vortex method is employed in the analysis. The result showed the appendage was effective to suppress heaving response. The mechanism of suppression was as follows. Circulation flow was formed on each side of the appendage by the movement of the girder. And the separation angle became lower and reattachment of the flow was encouraged.
