Blessed Mother Elżbieta Róża Czacka: an outstanding typhlopedagogue

Abstract

On September 12, 2021, Mother Elżbieta Róża Czacka was proclaimed Blessed. It is an opportunity to recall the events of her life and activity as well as her achievements in the field of typhlological theory and practice. We know Róża Czacka's views on the upbringing, education and rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired mainly thanks to specialist publications in pedagogical journals: "Szkoła Specjalna" (System Braille’a w Polsce [Braille System in Poland] and Książka niewidomego [Book of the Blind]) and „Ku szczytom” (Dziecko niewidome) [Blind Child]. The article pays particular attention to her research efforts to adapt the Braille system to the Polish alphabet, as well as to the topicality and great importance of her theses in the context of contemporary expectations. Both Róża Czacka and the environment she created and shaped enjoy unflagging recognition and social prestige.
